These codes are a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording and is independent of the distribution format (CD, MP3, etc).<\/p>\n<p>ISRCs are used by download sites and collecting societies for tracking and identify recordings for royalty payments.<\/p>\n<p>An ISRC is made up of 12 characters and split into four sections:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"\" class=\"x-container max width\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 0px auto; padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; \" ><div  class=\"x-column x-sm x-1-1\" style=\"padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; \" ><img  class=\"x-img x-img-none\"  src=\"http:\/\/www.trentdobson.com\/masteringguy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/isrc-colour.png\" ><\/div><\/div><div id=\"\" class=\"x-container max width\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 0px auto; padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; \" ><div  class=\"x-column x-sm x-1-1\" style=\"padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; \" ><div id=\"\" class=\"x-text\" style=\"\" ><ul>\n<li>The first two characters\u00a0<strong>identify the country<\/strong>\u00a0where the member is based (eg, \u2018US\u2019 represents \u2018United States\u2019).<\/li>\n<li>The next three characters\u00a0<strong>identify the recording\u00a0right holder<\/strong>. these are\u00a0three letters\u00a0and\/or numbers that are\u00a0assigned\u00a0and are specific to you as the rights holder.<\/li>\n<li>The next two characters\u00a0<strong>identify the year\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0that the recording was given an ISRC.<\/li>\n<li>The last five characters are\u00a0<strong>chosen\u00a0by\u00a0the right holder<\/strong>\u00a0when allocating recordings with an ISRC. These characters are always numbers. Generally these are\u00a0organised\u00a0sequentially, the\u00a0first recording \u201800001\u2019, the second \u201800002\u2019, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"\" class=\"x-container max width\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 0px auto; padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; \" ><div  class=\"x-column x-sm x-1-1\" style=\"padding: 0px 0px 0px 0px; \" ><div id=\"\" class=\"x-text\" style=\"\" ><h4>So how do you get codes?<\/h4>\n<p>You have to register for a registrant code with the appropriate society in your\u00a0country.
